Opening of a Chilean branch

 

We are pleased to announce that VibroSystM has opened its first branch abroad: VibroSystM Protección y Diagnóstico located in Chile.

This branch is comprised of a Field Service Director, Mr. Antonio Quiroz and three (3) Regional Sales Managers: Emiliano Tanco, Francisco Rodríguez Ochoa, and Mauricio Trincado. This sales team will be covering mining projects in Latin America under the responsibility of the Commercial Director – Mining, Mr. Patricio Canales.

At VibroSystM, we understand the importance of having an active role in the development and future of our youth. As part of society, it is important to encourage the growth and education of the future generation. This is especially true when we consider that it is those youth who will be joining the workforce and replacing us in the near future.

The Cost of Education

With all this said, we must remember that education is expensive. One starts to wonder how they are to succeed with the ever inflating costs of education. Forbes.com states (in the USA): “…Ask any family with post-secondary students and they will tell you just how outrageous are the costs of college education today.” Global News has reported that the cost of tuition in Canada has increased by 40% alone in the past 10 years.

Supporting Our Youth

Sometimes the only way to counteract the cost of education is through constant donations, grants, and sponsorships. It is always good to know that there are always opportunities to contribute to the development of our future workforce. We have all heard the adage of “children are the future.” What would we do without them? We would most likely struggle. This is why we need to support them, and it is just a matter of making the right selection of who and what to support.

Our Values

We value education. It is the key to developing a skilled and innovative workforce to ensure a strong economic outlook worldwide. This is why VibroSystM was delighted to have received visitors from Polytechnique Montreal who stopped by to show off their hand made/engineered SAE Baja vehicle. Members of the team came by to thank VibroSystM for its recent sponsorship. Our participation assisted the engineering students in developing this vehicle. We were really proud to be part of this great initiative as this aligns with our goal of having an impact on society with efforts to encourage growth and development in the science and engineering fields.

VibroSystM also donates to the “Fonds de développement de l’ÉTS” on a yearly basis. This is a scholarship program, managed by the university, for anyone in the field of engineering. We do not just stop at grants and scholarships. We also employ students as part of a work training co-op program as well as providing necessary resources to further learning and encourage the engagement of students within engineering.

As a closing note, we would like to congratulate the team as they placed 6th overall, out of 110 teams! What an exceptional outcome and an amazing reward for all their hard work! This surely was not an easy task!

(Club de Golf Gatineau / Golf Château Cartier).

The IEC meeting had come to an end and the next day was ushered in with an amazing invitation!


It is with great pleasure to announce that VibroSystM’s Test & Diagnostics director Mr. André Tétreault was recently invited to the Three Gorges Dam1 as part of the workgroup committee working with IEC for standard IEC 60034-33 ED1 – Rotating electrical machines – Part 33: Specific technical requirements for hydro generators. China Three Gorges Corporation (CTGC) to sponsor an IEC event that it opened up the power plant for a visit by the attending IEC group members.

The most amazing thing about this power station is not just the sheer size or the amount of energy that it outputs, but how quietly the generators operate. With minimal noise in the Power Station, visitors could actually speak at a reasonable volume and not have any difficulties to be heard.

The room was obviously buzzing with that energy. Jet-lagged; this being the active topic of discussion. It was setting in fast. With the urge to sleep gradually fading, everyone started to settle in. The discussion started with personal anecdotes and slowly migrated to the real discussion at hand.

The usual suspects were disagreeing with the rest of the group. Things did not appear to be going well, at least, so it seemed.

It felt like it was going to be a long day. Getting the participants to agree is a challenge. Participants are conservative and difficult to convince. These standards generally take several years to complete as a result. The workgroup agreed upon a timeline of 3 years to finalize this standard (publishing due in October of 2019).  The first meeting took place in Geneva, Switzerland. This was the second meeting in a scheduled series of 6.

Technical Standards defined in IEC 60034-33 TC2/WG33

With the room filled with the attendees around the conference table, member after member started raising their points of interest. Soon it was Mr. André Tétreault’s moment to speak. As professionals and pioneers in the industry, VibroSystM believes in active participation in setting technical standards.  As such, VibroSystM’s Test & Diagnostics Director Mr. André Tétreault is part of the workgroup committee working with the IEC for standard IEC 60034-33 ED1 – Rotating electrical machines – Part 33: Specific technical requirements for hydro generators.

Mr. Tétreault mentioned concerns regarding tolerances rotor and stator dynamic parameters, for absolute and relative vibration levels, amongst others. 
The topics of discussion varied but consisted of expected results or behavior for hydro-generators.

A few topics discussed at this meeting:

  • Stator winding temperatures
  • Insulation performance
  • Absolute and relative vibration levels
  • Rotor and stator dynamic parameters
  • Factory and site tests

The Purpose of the IEC

“The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) members come from all around the world. While each member is different, they do have one thing in common: all of them represent the entire range of electrotechnical interests in their country, companies and businesses, industry associations, educational bodies, governmental and regulatory bodies, for example. All stakeholders are brought together through the country’s member National Committee.”

How this Affects the Industry

All stakeholders that are involved in the active development of this international standard range from people/companies within the industry, consumers, academia, test laboratories, governments, and regulators. The stakeholders will need to submit comments and votes for the development of any standard.

“International Standards reflect agreements on the technical description of the characteristics to be fulfilled by the product, system, service or object in question. They are widely adopted at the regional or national level and are applied by manufacturers, trade organizations, purchasers, consumers, testing laboratories, governments, regulators and other interested parties.” 1

The changes that will come from the standards set in place by IEC 60034-33 ED1 TC2/WG33 will impact the Hydro Power Generation industry for the better. 

The Outcome

At this point in time, progress was made during this meeting but the discussion is ongoing. Standards discussions can be slow and take a considerable amount of time to develop. Nothing has been set in stone as of yet. As such, we will release more information as it becomes available! Stay tuned!
